We run a wide variety of workshops for aspiring milliners, sewers, curious crafters, and experienced makers who'd like to pick up a few new skills.
Unless stated otherwise, the workshops listed here are held in the millinery workroom at our store at 1287 North Road, Huntingdale, Victoria.
When attending a millinery Workshop at Torb & Reiner , you will need to bring certain tools and supplies. Usually they will be available for purchase at the time of your workshop if you don't have them already. Materials needed should all be listed on the workshop page but for a general guide have a look at our Workshop Requirements page for details.
If you are interested in a workshop we have run in the past or if you have a workshop suggestion, please contact us to express your interest!
Workshop: Crin Fabric Techniques - Sun 14th July
Crin Fabric Techniques
Torb & Reiner, 1287 North Road Huntingdale
Sun 14th July 2019 10am - 3pm
$180 + materials (approx $50)
03 95 04 4476, firstname.lastname@example.org or book online
Crin fabric has been around for a long time but again is one of those materials that has been on the periphery of millinery. Unlike what many of us know as crin this is not the horsehair braid. This is a woven fabric made from plastic rather than abaca or silk as many others in Millinery. It is not even similar to crin braid so don't get confused.
What will be taught?
You will be guided through techniques of cutting, shaping, joining, colouring and working with crin fabric. You will be able to make a selection of samples and trims to use on a piece. If you want to make a piece to wear you may bring along a base or headband and we will work towards that. However, you may miss out on some technique by doing so.
Suitable for: all levels, no previous experience required
Class Numbers: We need 4 students to run a class. If numbers are not reached I will contact you for a refund or reschedule. 6 is normally our maximum.
Tutor: This class is tutored by Lindsay Whitehead.
What to bring:
Most materials and equipment needed for this class are available for sale at Torb and Reiner. If you would like to purchase any of these items please come early or order before the day of the class so you can do so. You can always pick up more during the class as well once you get a feel for the materials.
Crin Fabric. At least half a metre of regular crin fabric (White is preferred)and half a metre of fine crin fabric (silver or gold is great)
Flower making tools.
Awl (one with a tapered shaft. The ones we sell are ideal $4.90)
Needle (size 8ish) and thread/s
Scissors (fabric and paper)
Wire (paper or thread covered, 19g millinery wire is ok)
Soldering iron with a small pointy tip. If you have electric flower making tools with a small tip like a nail then this is fine. If you are not sure please ask. You may buy them from me if you let me know before the day of the class.
Sand Bag - For flower making (foam is ok, but not as good as a sand bag)
Glass plate, Ceramic tile, metal tray or chopping board (listed in order of preference). This is to cut the crin on. It needs to be at least 30cm square and have a smooth preferable shiny surface and be heat resistant. I use a glass Lazy Susan top. I have used a large bathroom tile, which is just as good.
450 or UHU glue
Pen and Pencil
Metal Ruler (30cm)
Optional, but useful:
Large beads or metal findings for center of flowers
Design Master Sprays
Locktite Gel Super Glue
Places are strictly limited - don't miss out!
