Hats that do more than keep the sun off your faceMelbourne-based milliner Waltraud Reiner will run her Hats with Heart and Soul masterclass in Beaudesert on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 July. The workshop is part of Flying Arts’ statewide touring program, which, features a broad variety of visual arts media. "Everyone can wear a hat, everyone can make a hat", says Waltraud Reiner. "You just need to be shown how, to have it ’demystified’." This popular workshop will cover hat making from a variety of fibres and show participants how to make an old hat look new, how to make a hat fit different sized heads and how to wear (or not wear) a hat. Waltraud Reiner graduated from fashion school in Austria in 1976 and since then has made her name in millinery, following her passion for hats. After migrating to Melbourne, she opened her made-to-measure studio, By Appointment Only. As well as being one of more than 30 artists conducting workshops for Flying Arts this year, Waltraud is a senior TAFE lecturer and a writer for the magazine Fibre Forum. In addition to its touring workshop program, Flying Arts offers online visual arts training, the annual Experience the Arts residency for secondary students, exhibiting opportunities for regional artists and an annual Artists Retreat. Flying Arts gratefully acknowledges its major sponsors: The Queensland Government through Arts Queensland and the Department of Employment and Training; host institution The University of Southern Queensland; and program supporters ABN AMRO Morgans, Bank of Queensland, BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA), the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, Macair Airlines, Minter Ellison Lawyers, NQX Freight System, Pitcher Partners and Toll Priority.
