FOSSHAPE® is a type of thermoplastic - a unique, heat-activated synthetic fabric that looks a little like felt. Once heated, FOSSHAPE® becomes stiff and structured, to create a firm foundation for a hat, costume piece, set piece or textile sculpture.
Some of the benefits of FOSSHAPE® include:
Like felt, it does not fray
It is extremely lightweight
No additives or drying time required
Remains porous and breathable after stiffening
Resistant to mould, mildew and water damage.
FOSSHAPE® can be moulded using dry or wet heat. It needs to be heated to around 200ºF (or 90ºC).We recommended using a fabric/costume steamer to work with FOSSHAPE®. You may also use an industrial hot air gun.
When you begin heating the fabric, bring the heat source slowly towards the fabric and use a waving motion to heat the whole area slowly and evenly. This will prevent the fabric from heating too quickly and shrinking unevenly. After activation, FOSSHAPE® can shrink by up to 30%.
In millinery, FOSSHAPE® is a superbly effective blocking material, commonly used as a substitute for buckram. It is superior to buckram in many ways, because it does not require any additional chemicals for treating or stiffening. FOSSHAPE® only requires heat to be blocked and stiffened over any shape. It is also far more durable and water-resistant.
FOSSHAPE® is ideal for:
Hat blocking - FOSSHAPE® creates a strong yet breathable foundation for any hat.
Sculptural work - FOSSHAPE® can be moulded over any shape you like. It will hold a firm structure, but remains flexible.
Reinforcing foundations - FOSSHAPE® can be easily sewn to any other material as a backing.
This fabulous contemporary material is revolutionising the way milliners block hats. It is also hugely popular in costume design, sculpture and cosplay.
